Questions worth asking

Before you apply

Everything you may want to know before applying to work with Bucklin Design Co.

What happens after I submit my application?

Alex personally reviews each application. If your project, timing and scope appear to be a strong fit for BDC, we'll invite you to a complimentary discovery call to learn more about your home and what you're looking for. From there, we'll develop a custom proposal outlining the recommended scope, design process and fee.

What does full-service design actually include?

Full-service design means BDC leads the interior design process rather than advising on individual decisions. Depending on your project, that may include space planning, cabinetry and interior architectural details, materials and finishes, lighting, plumbing fixtures, furnishings, custom pieces, design documentation, procurement and installation. Your proposal will outline exactly what is included for your project.

How much should I expect to invest?

Full-service design fees typically begin at $25,000+, with most new construction and comprehensive renovation engagements beginning around $25,000 to $30,000 and increasing based on scope, complexity and the level of involvement required. Furnishings, materials, construction and contractor costs are separate from BDC's design fees.

When is the right time to bring BDC into my project?

For new construction and renovations, earlier is almost always better. Ideally, BDC is involved before major interior decisions are finalized and while there is still flexibility to influence the details that will shape the finished home. If construction is already underway, that doesn't necessarily mean you're too late. Tell us where you are in the process when you apply, and we'll determine whether the timing and remaining scope are a good fit.

Do you work with my architect and builder?

Yes. For new construction and renovation projects, BDC works collaboratively with your architect, builder and trades on design-related decisions throughout our contracted scope. We believe the strongest projects happen when the design is considered as a whole and the right conversations happen early, rather than each piece being decided independently.

How involved will I be in the design process?

You'll be involved at key points throughout the project, particularly as we establish the overall direction and present major design decisions for approval. From there, our role is to take on the research, coordination and countless smaller decisions required to carry that vision through, so you can stay involved without having to manage every detail yourself.

Will my home still feel like me?

Absolutely. BDC brings a strong design perspective, but we aren't interested in giving every client the same house. We want to understand how you live, what you're drawn to and how you want your home to feel, then translate that into a cohesive design that feels distinctly yours.

Where are you based?

Bucklin Design Co. is based in Metro Detroit, with a primary focus on projects in Metro Detroit and Naples, Florida. We also take on select projects nationwide when the scope and fit are right, with travel incorporated as needed.

What if I don't need full-service design?

You may be a great fit for our Private Design Intensive. It's designed for homeowners who are comfortable managing their own project but want Alex's perspective on their plans, selections or specific design questions. The Intensive includes advance project review and a private 90-minute working session, without the commitment of a full-service engagement.
